Curry in Japan is probably more popular than you would think, and is actually the quintessentially spicy dish in the country. The spice mix known as curry powered, and curried dishes, were most likely introduced to Japan in 1853 by the Anglo-Indian officers of the Royal Navy, along with other stalwarts of the British Empire. Japanese curry is particularly popular in the summertime, helping to stimulate an appetite dulled by the hot weather.
