Many people look to the new year as a time for growth and renewal as it represents a fresh start! The Chinese New Year has not yet happened as it does not align exactly with the Western calendar; the 2021 Chinese New Year is based on the Chinese lunar calendar, beginning on February 12th, and ending on January 31st 2022. As many will know, each new year is characterised by an animal – chosen from the twelve animals of the zodiac. These animals play an important role in Chinese culture and are believed to represent people’s personalities and fortunes, depending on which year they are born. 2021 is the year of the Ox! The Chinese Zodiac
In the Chinese New Year, every year is represented by one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. The animals include Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. The Ox is the second animal in the cycle. According to folklore, the rank of the animals was first determined by the order that each of them arrived at the Jade Emperor’s palace. The Ox came in second because it was kind and gave the rat a ride. The devious rat jumped ahead at the last minute, earning first place. Each year and zodiac is also aligned with an element. 2021 is aligned with Metal. The element that is aligned with a particular year will determine the fortune of the year, and the people born into it.
Characteristics of the Ox
The Ox is highly revered in Chinese culture because of its associations with agriculture and hard work. Oxen are said to be sincere and reliable. Although they are hardworking, they never seek praise or attention. Diligence, honesty, and persistence are important traits to the Ox.For those born in years of the Ox, weaknesses include being reserved, too conservative and over-cautious. Being born in a year with the Metal and Ox combination is said to result in individuals who are busy, active and can build strong connections.
2021: The Year of Hard Work
As the Ox is synonymous with hard work and discipline, prosperity and positivity are usually expected to follow. According to the Chinese horoscope, 2021 is set to be a challenging year, but with these challenges comes an opportunity for progress and renewed determination. It is perhaps no coincidence that the new year is characterised by perseverance and focus on the future after such a disastrous year in 2020. Metal also denotes teamwork and community, something that many of us have been reaching for over the past year. If you follow the beliefs behind the Chinese zodiac and New Year, it seems that 2021, the year of the Ox, is set to be a good year full of determination and well-earned prosperity!
