Street Food Snacking: Korean Hot Dogs Recipe
When wandering the streets of South Korea, you will never be too far from a delicious dish. Street food is a huge part of the culinary world in South Korea, offering a convenient way to enjoy the flavours of Korean cuisine in tasty bites. One of the most popular forms of street food is serving tasty treats on a skewer - including hot dogs or corn dogs. In Korea, hot dogs aren’t the same as the sausage in a bun dish that you would find in America. Instead, they are more similar to corn dogs. Korean hot dogs are made from sausage and cheese that is wrapped in a dough, covered in breadcrumbs and deep-fried. They are then sprinkled with sugar. There are plenty of variations on this recipe too. You can find Korean hot dogs filled with all sorts of cheese, rice cakes or potatoes. Mozzarella and cheddar cheeses are the most commonly used for these hot dogs. Another popular variation is including squid ink in the breadcrumbs to make a darker coloured hot dog! You can find the ingredients you need for this recipe at our Korean supermarket online in the UK.
To make these hot dogs, you will need:
- 6 hot dog sausages (or use sticks of mozzarella)
- 6 wooden skewers or disposable chopsticks
- 120g of panko breadcrumbs
- 160g plain flour
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 large egg
- 125 ml fat-free milk
- oil for frying
Method:
- Skewer the hot dogs or mozzarella sticks with the wooden skewers. You can even use both and cut the sausage and mozzarella in half and put half of each on one skewer.
- Pop the skewers into the fridge to keep them cold while you make the batter.
- In a large bowl, add the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt and whisk together until blended. Add in the egg and milk and whisk until smooth. Ideally, the batter should be thick, sticky and shouldn’t run when the whisk is lifted.
- Add the batter to a wide dish or pan. It needs to be big enough for you to easily coat the hot dog! In a separate dish, add the panko crumbs.
- Dip the skewer into the batter and make sure the sausage or cheese is well-coated, but not too thick. Then roll the hot dog in panko crumbs. You can sprinkle or pat the crumbs on if there are any gaps.
- Add oil to a pan for frying. There needs to be enough oil that it will cover the entire hot dog. Heat the oil to 180 degrees Celsius.
- Add 2-3 hot dogs to the pan at a time and cook for a few minutes on each side until the batter turns a dark golden brown colour.
- Remove the hot dogs, pat off any excess oil and then sprinkle the hot dogs with a little granulated sugar.
Serving suggestion: Top the hot dogs with a condiment of your choice, such as ketchup, spicy mayonnaise or mustard. Take a look at our Asian condiments to get inspired.
