How to Make Japanese Parfait

Parfait, originally from France, has become widely popular in Japan. The French version of parfait is more of a custard whereas it was actually the American version that inspired the Japanese dish – this includes parfait cream, ice cream and fruit. We take a look at how the Japanese have made the traditional dessert their own and how you can make it yourself!To create a Japanese parfait, the common ingredients used are fresh whipped cream, ice cream, cake and plenty of fruit! Many parfaits include a crunchy element as well; this can often be cornflakes, waffle or crackers. Some more traditional Japanese additions to parfaits include shiratama dango (dumpling made from mochi rice flour dough), anko (red bean paste sweetened with sugar) and kuromitsu (dark sugar syrup). You can be as creative and unique as you want with a Japanese parfait, but common versions include matcha, chocolate banana and strawberry.
